Lauderdale is a native of Oakland, California, and was adopted from Kerby Roy, and Linda Sue (Mikesell) Lauderdale. The family relocated to Indiana and his father served as pastor at Eel River Church of the Brethren. After church, Lauderdale would go to the piano and try to recreate the hymns that he had heard. His parents purchased an upright piano during auction and he began his formal music studies at the age of six alongside Patricia Garrison of North Manchester, Indiana and later, Joyanne Jones at Indiana University/Purdue University , in Fort Wayne.
